Thibaudet Plays Turangalîla | May 17 & 18
Schermerhorn Symphony Center
Fri, May 17 8:00 pm

Enter a world of sound unlike any other in Messiaen's singular Turangalîla-symphonie. This "song of love" features the ondes Martenot, a vintage electronic instrument that adds shimmering, otherworldly textures to an expansive piece of music that continues to inspire and astound listeners 70 years after its premiere. Bird songs, sacred Hindu music, Indonesian gamelan, percussive piano, soaring orchestral melodies — these and more come together to form what Messiaen called "a hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death. ”This concert will open with a lecture and demonstration led by Giancarlo Guerrero and soloists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Cynthia Millar, with a special focus on the ondes Martenot. Please note: There will be no pre-concert lecture in the Balcony Lobby for this performance.
