Boys and their toys used to mean cars, tech or sports equipment.

Today, the toy of the moment is designed to help antsy men (and OK, women) feel a sense of calm and focus.

Fidget Toys are devices that can help people prone to “fidgeting” keep calm and stay focused. The most popular versions are the Fidget Spinners and Fidget Cube. Both are self-regulated toys that act as a mechanism to release nervous energy.

Fidget Toys are made of various types of plastic, metal or ceramic and come in different colors and shapes. The Fidget Spinner has a bearing in the middle and prongs that spin around it, creating a sensory experience that some find relaxing yet mesmerizing at the same time. The Fidget Cube is similar to the experience of clicking a pen, except it has different buttons and shapes that click, roll or slide.

Stress-relieving devices have always been a part of therapy for anxiety, ADHD and other medical issues. But these sensory super toys have become popular with children and adults.

Maybe because we live in a hurry-up world, but there is something comforting about a gadget that is dubbed “toy” yet serves to give a measure of calm. The only non-calming element to the trend? The toy is so popular that stores are often sold out within hours of new shipments. Much like the Cabbage Patch dolls in the 1980s that had as many adults as children clamoring for a toy, the stress-buster toy has become a cachet item for some.

The Fidget Toys are sold at local big box stores, online, at Brilliant Sky Toys and Books in Green Hills and Brentwood and at kiosks located at CoolSprings Galleria in Franklin, Opry Mills in Nashville and Stones River Mall in Murfreesboro.
